Initial setting time of cement

The period between the time, water is added to the cement and the time, the needle fails to pierce the test block by 5.0 ± 0.5 mm, measured from the bottom of the mold, is the initial setting time.

The initial setting is the time when the chemical reaction between cement and water begins (the paste begins to lose its plasticity) and should not be less than 30 minutes without additives.

Final setting time of cement

The period between the time, water is added to the cement and the time, the needle makes an impression on the surface of the test block, while the attachment fails to do so, is the final setting time.

Final setting is the time the chemical reaction between cement and water ends (the time at which the cement completely loses its plasticity and hardens is the final setting time of cement) and for ordinary Portland cement, the final setting time is 600 minutes or 10 hours.

Initial and final setting time of various types of cements are given as :-
