For calculating the quantities of cement, sand and aggregates required for 1㎥ for Nominal mixes as:
M-10
M-15
M-20
M-25  (Nominal mix)

Let me show you how to calculate the quantities for above Nominal mixes one by one as under:

1.Concrete mix design for M-10 (1:3:6) grade of concrete:

As we know that when we pour wet concrete during concreting, it hardens after certain standard time. In view of this, it was decided by the Civil Design Engineers to take a factor of safety from 1.54 to 1.57 .

so we can say, Volume of dry concrete = 1.54 to 1.57 times the volume of wet concrete

 I m assuming 1.54 as a safety factor

Therefore, the total volume of concrete required is 1.54.

 As per IS456:2000, M-10 Grade concrete proportion is  = 1 :  3 : 6

Remember, here  (1:3:6)  indicates:

1 for cement

3 for sand

6 for aggregate

Total volume (cement + sand + aggregate) = 1 +  3 + 6= 10

Calculation of Volume of Cement in 1  of Concrete

 Volume of cement= (cement/cement+sand+aggregate) x 1.54

 Quantity of cement=  (cement/total volume) x1.54

                              =  (1/10)x1.54

                              =  0.154

we know , Volume of a one cement bag =0.0347

Thus Total  no. of bags required for 1 = 0.154/0.0347

                                                            = 4.52   bags

Hence, we require 4.52 bags of cement for 1 cu.m of concrete.

As we know,  1 Bag of cement weighs 50 kg (one bag of cement)

so For 1 of concrete we have ,

Total  no. of bags required x 50 kg of cement = 4.52 x 50 = 226 kg

For 1
of Concrete = 226 Kgs of Cement is required.

Calculation of Volume of Sand (Fine Aggregate) in  1 of Concrete:

Volume of sand= (sand/cement+sand+aggregate) x 1.54

Quantity of sand =  (sand/total volume) x1.54

                               =  (3/10)x1.54

                               =  0.462

1 of sand = 1600-1800 kg

Assume 1600 kg

 0.462  of sand =1600 x 0.462

                        = 739 kg

The volume of sand increases as it contains moisture. For accurate calculation use dry sand.

Hence we require 739 kg of sand  for 1 cu.m of concrete.

Calculation of Volume of Coarse Aggregate in 1 of Concrete:-

Volume of aggregate= (aggregate/cement+sand+aggregate) x 1.54

Quantity of aggregate=  (aggregate/total volume) x1.54

                                      =  (6/10)x1.54

                                       =  0.924

1 of aggregate = 1500-1800 kg

Assume 1500 kg

 0.924  of aggregate =1500 x 0.924

                        = 1386 kg

If void spaces decreases, density of aggregate may go higher.

Hence we require 1386 kg of aggregates (20 mm)  for 1 cu.m of concrete.

Water  required for 1  of concrete: -

Water is added for making the concrete mass and it depends upon the climatic conditions whether hot or cold weather and workability.

We typically maintain a 0.35–0.50 to water cement ratio. Remember, the above values may change according to the moisture content present in the sand and aggregates.

Cement Required for 1of Concrete  = 226 Kgs

Assume W/C ratio = 0.45

Water required for 1 of Concrete = 226 x 0.45

Amount of water required for 1 of Concrete = 102 kgs = 102 litres.

Hence 180 Litres of Water is required for 1 of M10 Concrete.

2.Concrete mix design for M-15 (1:2:4) grade of concrete:

Remember, here  (1:2:4)  indicates:

1 for cement

2 for sand

4 for aggregate

Total volume (cement + sand + aggregate) = 1 +  2 + 4= 7

Calculation of Volume of Cement in 1  of Concrete

Volume of cement= (cement/cement+sand+aggregate) x 1.54

Quantity of cement=  (cement/total volume) x1.54

                              =  (1/7)x1.54

                              =  0.22

we know , Volume of a one cement bag =0.0347

Thus Total  no. of bags required for 1 = 0.22/0.0347

                                                              = 6.47   bags

Hence, we require 6.47 bags of cement for 1 cu.m of concrete.

As we know,  1 Bag of cement weighs 50 kg (one bag of cement)

so For 1 of concrete we have ,

 Total  no. of bags required x 50 kg of cement = 6.47 x 50 = 324 kg

For 1 of Concrete = 324 Kgs of Cement is required.

Calculation of Volume of Sand (Fine Aggregate) in  1 of Concrete:

Volume of sand= (sand/cement+sand+aggregate) x 1.54

Quantity of sand =  (sand/total volume) x1.54

                               =  (2/7)x1.54

                               =  0.44

1 of sand = 1600-1800 kg

Assume 1600 kg

0.44 of sand =1600 x 0.44

                        = 704 kg

Hence we require 704 kg of sand  for 1 cu.m of concrete.

Calculation of Volume of Coarse Aggregate in 1 of Concrete:-

Volume of aggregate= (aggregate/cement+sand+aggregate) x 1.54

Quantity of aggregate=  (aggregate/total volume) x1.54

                                       =  (4/6)x1.54

                                       =  0.88

1 of aggregate = 1500-1800 kg

Assume 1500 kg

0.88 of aggregate =1500 x 0.88

                        = 1320 kg

Hence we require 1320 kg of aggregates (20 mm)  for 1 cu.m of concrete.

Water  required for 1  of concrete: -

Cement Required for 1of Concrete  = 324 Kgs

Assume W/C ratio = 0.45

Water required for 1 of Concrete = 324 x 0.45

Amount of water required for 1 of Concrete = 102 kgs = 146 litres.

Hence 180 Litres of Water is required for 1 of M15 Concrete.

3.Concrete mix design for M-20 (1:1.5:3) grade of concrete

For that article click M-20 Mixcalculation.

4.Concrete mix design for M-25 (1:1:2) grade of concrete:

Remember, here  (1:1:2)  indicates:

1 for cement

1 for sand

2 for aggregate

Total volume (cement + sand + aggregate) = 1 +  1 + 2= 4

Calculation of Volume of Cement in 1  of Concrete

Volume of cement= (cement/cement+sand+aggregate) x 1.54

Quantity of cement=  (cement/total volume) x1.54

                              =  (1/4)x1.54

                              =  0.385

we know , Volume of a one cement bag =0.0347

Thus Total  no. of bags required for 1 = 0.308/0.0347

                                                              = 11.3   bags

Hence, we require 9.05 bags of cement for 1 cu.m of concrete.

As we know,  1 Bag of cement weighs 50 kg (one bag of cement)

so For 1 of concrete we have ,

Total  no. of bags required x 50 kg of cement = 11.3 x 50 = 565 kg

For 1 of Concrete = 565 Kgs of Cement is required.

Calculation of Volume of Sand (Fine Aggregate) in  1 of Concrete:

 Volume of sand= (sand/cement+sand+aggregate) x 1.54

Quantity of sand =  (sand/total volume) x1.54

                               =  (1/4)x1.54

                               =  0.385

1 of sand = 1600-1800 kg

Assume 1600 kg

0.385  of sand =1600 x 0.385

                        = 616 kg

Hence we require 616 kg of sand  for 1 cu.m of concrete.

Calculation of Volume of Coarse Aggregate in 1 of Concrete:-

 Volume of aggregate= (aggregate/cement+sand+aggregate) x 1.54

 Quantity of aggregate=  (aggregate/total volume) x1.54

                                       =  (2/4)x1.54

                                       =  0.77

1 of aggregate = 1500-1800 kg

Assume 1500 kg

0.77 of aggregate =1500 x0.77

                        = 1155 kg

Hence we require 1155 kg of aggregates (20 mm)  for 1 cu.m of concrete.

Water  required for 1  of concrete: -

Cement Required for 1of Concrete  = 565 Kgs

Assume W/C ratio = 0.45

Water required for 1 of Concrete = 565 x 0.45

Amount of water required for 1 of Concrete = 254 kgs = 254 litres.

Hence 254 Litres of Water is required for 1 of M25 Concrete.
